from the poetry book ‘Images of Life’
Poetry book by E.T. Milligan
I wrote this poem as I thought about what it would be like to live in a slower, simpler environment and be able to enjoy the beauty of nature and unsettled lands that haven’t been destroyed or disrupted by industrialization.
O’ For the Glory of the Great Plains A Poem by E.T. Milligan
oh heavens, for glory, take me away
this land, I feel has brought a sense
of every growing hostility
surrounding failing industry
and increasing anonymity
calling for refuge, far away
i cry, o’ glory, for me homeland
renewing sights of scattered wildlife,
as majestic breezes
blows tumbleweed
across fertile soil
which harvests feed
upon this land
unsettled claims of heaven
for the glory,
of the Great Plains
oh heavens, for glory, take me away
some thousand miles
from industrial means
of sheltered feelings,
beneath those appealing
for something revealing a meaningful life
i cry, o’ glory, for my homeland
the quiet splendor
of cattle grazing
through morning dew
where timber wolves and caribou,
parade a soon forgotten land
upon this land
unsettled claims of heaven…
for the glory,
of the Great Plains.
